I've heard there are issues but so far the President is still set on inaugurating it on Independence Day (which would be 17th of this month). Also, they're still working on the infrastructures; and it'll be a while before it becomes a "real city" (2045 is when the whole project is supposed to be "fully finished").
I find the whole idea of building a capital city from near scratch fascinating. But we have DC and Constantine had his Byzantium. So, I guess it takes vision and a bit of hard-headedness. And, December rains in Jakarta were devastating 20 years ago.
I mean, I'm a Jakarta boy, so I'm personally not the biggest fan of the capital move. But I understand why they're doing it. I'm also big on history and there's just so much history in Jakarta (and it's been the capital for so long) so it feels wrong to leave that behind, but that's just me.
Though funnily enough during the Dutch rule, the government was planning to move the capital to Bandung but then the Revolution broke out. And the rest is history, lol.
Not to worry. Most people think NYC is the capital of NY State... Jakarta will keep it's cachet for a long, long time. Let the bureaucrats move to Nusanatara :)
Wow! How's the new capital city coming along?
